What is a Switch and what is it used for?
A switch, also known as a network switch, is a device that allows communication between different devices on a computer network. Switches are key components of a network infrastructure as they allow data to be transferred between computers, servers, printers and other devices. Unlike simple hubs, switches intelligently direct network traffic, which increases network efficiency and performance.
Switches can be divided into several types depending on their functions and applications:
- External Switch: These are switches designed to operate in harsh outdoor environments. They feature a high degree of weather resistance, making them an ideal choice for outdoor installations, in public areas or in industry. Examples include Extralink Atlas, which offers 8 RJ45 1000Mb/s PoE ports, 2 SFP ports and active cooling.
- PoE switch: A switch (Power over Ethernet) delivers both data and power over a single Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power cables. This is particularly useful in areas where access to power is limited. An example is Extralink 8-7 PoE Switchwhich has 8 LAN ports and 8 PoE ports.
How do you choose the right Switch?
- Capacity: Pay attention to the LAN standard supported by the switch. Fast Ethernet (10/100Mb/s) may be sufficient for smaller networks, while larger networks may require switches that support Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mb/s).
- PoE vs. Non-PoE: If you plan to power devices such as IP cameras, VoIP telephones or access points directly via the Ethernet cable, choose a PoE switch.
- Number of ports: Make sure the switch has enough ports for all the devices on your network. For example, if you need multiple connections, Extralink ARES PoE Switch offers 16 Gigabit PoE/PoE+ ports, 2 SFP ports and 1 console port.
- Place of installation: If the switch will be placed outdoors, choose a model designed for harsh weather conditions.
