What is a standing server rack?

Standing server racks are essential components of IT infrastructure, designed to store and organise equipment such as servers, switches, routers and other network devices. These cabinets are floor-mounted and offer a large capacity, enabling secure and efficient management of equipment in data centres, server rooms and offices.

Rack-mounted server cabinet types

  • Height (U): Standing racks are available in various heights, measured in U units . Depending on your needs, you can choose racks from 22U to 42U to accommodate from a dozen to several dozen devices.
  • Cabinet depthTypical cabinet depths are 600 mm and 1000 mm. Deeper cabinets are ideal for mounting larger servers and equipment that require more space.
  • Load capacity: Standing racks also vary in load capacity, which is crucial when installing heavy equipment. Choosing a cabinet with the right load capacity will ensure that your equipment is safely stored.
  • Ventilation system: Built-in vents or the ability to mount additional fans ensure efficient cooling of the equipment, which is key to its longevity and reliability.

How do I choose the right upright server rack?

  1. Cooling: Check that the cabinet has an adequate ventilation system or the possibility of installing additional fans. Adequate cooling is key to ensuring the longevity of the equipment.
  1. Height (U): Determine the amount of equipment you intend to install in order to select the appropriate cabinet height. For a medium sized installation you may wish to consider a 27U enclosure as Extralink 27U 600x1000which can accommodate a considerable number of devices.
  1. Depth: Choose the depth of the cabinet according to the size of your equipment. If you have larger servers, opt for a cabinet with a depth of 1,000 mm, for example. Extralink 42U 800×1000which provides adequate space and facilitates cable management.
  1. Load capacity: Make sure the cabinet has sufficient load capacity to accommodate all the planned equipment. If you plan to install heavier equipment, e.g. in 32U or 37U racks, look for models with a robust construction such as Extralink 37U 600x1000
