What is an RJ45 plug?

An RJ45 connector is a connector used in Ethernet cables, consisting of 8 pins that allow the transmission of data signals. They are used in computer networks to connect devices such as computers, routers, switches and other network devices.

How do I choose an RJ45 plug?

Workmanship: Choose plugs made of high-quality materials that ensure durable and reliable connections.

Cable category: Make sure the plug is compatible with the category of cable you are using. For example, for a Cat5e cable, the following would be suitable Extralink Cat5e FTP RJ45

Shielding: Depending on your operating environment, you may need a shielded (FTP) or unshielded (UTP) plug. Shielded plugs offer additional protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Shielded vs. Unshielded RJ45 plugs

  • Shielded RJ45 (FTP) plugs: They have an extra layer of protection against electromagnetic interference. Extralink Cat6 FTP RJ45 is ideal for use in areas with high EMI, such as server rooms and industrial plants.
  • Unshielded RJ45 plugs (UTP): They have no additional interference protection, but are lighter and cheaper. They work well in less demanding environments where there is not much electromagnetic interference.
