What is Fibre Optic Splitters?

Also known as optical splitters, they are passive devices used in optical fibre networks to split one optical signal into multiple output signals. They make it possible to split one input into multiple outputs, which is crucial in extended FTTH (Fiber to the Home) networks and other telecommunications systems.

Types of Fibre Optic Splitters

  • PLC Splitters - are ideal for distributing signals over multiple paths with high precision. They are characterised by stability over a wide range of wavelengths and are used in networks requiring uniform signal separation.
  • FBT Splitters - are often used in networks with less need for even signal distribution. FBT technology involves fusing and splicing fibres together, which makes them less expensive to manufacture, but they can have higher signal losses compared to PLC splitters.
  • FWDM Splitters - are used to separate optical signals into different wavelengths. They are indispensable in advanced telecommunications networks where it is important to separate channels at different wavelengths.

How to Choose the Right Fibre Optic Splitter?

  1. Application of the network: Determine whether you need a splitter for FTTH, CATV or another type of fibre network. For example, for FTTH networks, PLC splitters are often chosen, such as Extralink 1:16 PLC Splitter
  1. Number of outputs: Determine how many outputs are required. Splitters can have different numbers of outputs, e.g. 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, etc. A higher number of outputs may require a more sophisticated splitter.
  1. Connector type: Splitters can have different connector types, such as SC/APC or SC/UPC. The choice of connector should be according to the requirements of your network. Examples include Extralink PLC 1:16 SC/APC Splitter i Extralink 1:16 PLC SC/UPC Splitter
  1. Type of splitter: Choose between a PLC, FBT or FWDM splitter depending on the needs of your network. If you need precise signal splitting, choose a PLC splitter. If you are looking for a more cost-effective solution, choose an FBT. For advanced wavelength applications, choose a splitter Extralink 1:2 FWDM SC/APC.

Choosing the right splitter can make a significant difference to the performance of your fibre network. Before buying, it is worthwhile to carefully analyse the needs of your network and choose the product that best meets them.
