LUNA 1GE is the unit of optical network EPONdesigned to meet the requirements of a broadband access network. It shall be used in FTTH/FTTO to provide data and video services based on the EPON network.

EPON is the latest generation of access network technology. IEEE802.3ah is the standard EPON protocol. The EPON standard differs from other passive optical network standards in that it achieves higher throughput and higher efficiency using larger, variable-length packets. EPON offers efficient management of user traffic with frame segmentation to achieve higher quality of service (QOS) for delay-sensitive voice and video communication traffic.
